A Timeless and Livable Space:
My friend J already has impeccable taste, and in her living room I was more her partner in crime versus the one solely setting the plan. On our many shopping trips we jokingly called each other Thelma and Louise and had a good time selecting or swooning over elements we love. We collaborated a ton on this space and I was more like the friend who "lovingly" helped her keep the space in check so we didn't go overboard on any single element or theme and didn't make any hasty purchases (think too much leopard print is never a good thing, but just the right amount is golden). With 3 kids, a husband and sweet pup, J wants the space to look great, to function for tons of traffic and family, and still be able to be "lived in," and we did just that. A beautiful new sectional grounds this space and we reupholstered some beautiful leather chairs with a complementary velvet to update the look and carry out more of the blue elements through the room in her drapery and accessories. Other fun elements such as the new drapery and lucite rods, a new bookshelf and many other details really gave the space everything J needed. The space is timeless and will be able to withstand many a slumber party to come.
Great First Impressions Foyer and Powder Room:
After moving into their new home, Client M had other priorities before tackling the foyer and first floor powder room. Once the family settled in and decided to take on the task, we talked through how to enhance and work with the existing colors of the woodwork, which was a very creamy white, that sometimes picked up hints of yellow both on the walls and the floors. As a result we decided first on a color swap for the walls to match the molding to make things more neutral in the main entry and allow for more options as we thought through the functional needs for the space. Better lighting and a landing spot for mail and keys and some storage was a must in the entry as well as maximizing the space in the first floor powder room. We measured and remeasured everything to ensure we had the right scale for each room from the floor grates and new plumbing fixtures to the ceiling light, lamps and art. We really wanted to stay in keeping with the style of the home while making the foyer and powder room feel fresh and new with a little more drama and I think the space does just that. It's bright, functional and beautiful and is one of my favorites to date!
Man Cave Makeover:
If your house is like mine, my husband doesn't get too much say when it comes to how the house should look and his opinion is relegated to "the man cave." While I always listen and suggestions are noted, I don't always implement what the hubs has to say. But when it came to this space, I designed it specifically for him-black moulding throughout, lots of warm tones and collections of all things London. I wanted this retreat to be all about him and creating a space reflecting some of his loves — Bourbon, football, music, the city of London and to still have the capacity to host our friends and kids for football, cards and movie night.
Tween Bedroom:
It was tough to hand over the reins on this one, but we promised a grown-up tween bedroom to my daughter and with her input, I think we did quite all right. She wanted a mint green backdrop and after a few trials and errors on the paint, we found the perfect one. For her furniture, we found a beautiful campaign-style desk that didn't break the bank and a newly upholstered grey velvet headboard with brass nailhead trim that will carry her through her teens and into her adulthood. We wanted the room to still feel like a young girl lived in it, but was also something that could transition with her as she grows. We picked a fun flush-mount light and a small grey leather sofa that could withstand some spills along the way and offered her a fun hangout space for her and her friends. She has everything she needs.
